Orthopaedic Volunteers Honored with the
President’s Call to Service Award

[Washington, D.C. February 16, 2007] - Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) is pleased to announce that Jay Cox, MD; David Denzel, MD; Richard Fisher, MD; Richard Kemme, MD; Salvatore LaPilusa, MD; Kirk Lewis, MD; W.W. Schaefer, MD; David Spiegel, MD; Robert Stein, MD; and Lewis Zirkle, MD are recipients of the President’s Call to Service Award which honors those who have dedicated over 4,000+ hours of volunteer service, the equivalent of 2 years of full time service. These HVO ambassadors were commemorated with this lifetime achievement award that recognizes exceptional work in service at both the local and global levels.

Established in 2003, the award is available on an annual basis to individuals, groups and families who have met or exceeded requirements for volunteer service and have demonstrated exemplary citizenship through volunteering. HVO conferred this award at the Orthopaedic Overseas Annual luncheon, which took place during with the AAOS Annual Meeting in San Diego.

The recipients of this prestigious award have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to volunteerism in developing countries. Their volunteer assignments have sent them to all corners of the world from clinics in Malawi to hospitals and rehabilitation centers in Vietnam. During their assignments not only did they provide high quality health care education to their colleagues abroad but they also gained an appreciation for and commitment to the improvement of global health.

In the last two decades HVO has placed over 3,600 highly trained and dedicated health care professionals to fulfill over 5,000 volunteer assignments in 43 countries. HVO volunteers work to increase health care access in developing countries through clinical training and education programs in child health, primary care, trauma and rehabilitation, essential surgical care, oral health, infectious disease, nursing education and burn management.

The award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making. The council is chaired by Jean Case of the Case Foundation and with Michael W. Smith, an award-winning recording artist as vice-chair.
